You are a grown up with a precious little one who is in your mind as you are reading this. You want your child to be happy most of the time, and you wish they don’t have to struggle the challenges they are facing. You want the best for them. You are wondering - would my child benefit from this?
Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) is a therapeutic and evidence-based intervention designed for children (ages 3-10) who are experiencing social, emotional, behavioral, and relational challenges.
In CCPT, a safe, nurturing, and fully-accepting space is created so children are allowed to self-explore, express their inner emotions and play out the experiences of their inner worlds. This facilitates children to process their emotions and unresolved issues. CCPT also includes regular parent consultation, focusing on enhancing parent-child attachment, and developing deeper attunement to the child’s underlying needs behind the behavioural symptoms. The expected outcomes of CCPT include decreased symptomatic behaviours and improvement in overall functioning.
CCPT is unique because it is a fully child-led experience. Instead of talk, play, the child’s natural language, is used as the means of communication. The unconditionally accepting therapist provides a relationship in which the child feels safe to explore inner emotions and wisdom. Child Centred Play Therapists do not provide coaching nor behavioural intervention.
What exactly is Child Centred Play Therapy?
Why Child Centred Play Therapy?
I am a Registered Social Worker (Master’s Level) currently working on my postgraduate registration as a Registered Play Therapist under Association of Play Therapy (USA). I am supervised by Dr. Emily Oe (RPT-S). But my encounter with Play Therapy started way back….
I was a child in a play room too! Believing it would help me and my siblings become attuned and securely attached children, my mom took the Child Parent Relationship Therapy, a Child Centred Play Therapy training catered to parents, and set up sacred ‘special play time’ with us weekly.
The experience made me the person I am today. I formed unshakable core beliefs that I am worthy and enough. I am empathetic, and attuned to my inner wisdom.
I highly recommend Child Centred Play Therapy as a former child in therapy!
